I was born, raised, and lived in Mississippi for most of my life. Like many people I went to college but I spent most of my time doing the things I did in college. I was also on a high school jazz band that toured Mississippi and made it to several shows in Alabama. The band was the center of the music scene in the southern state.

While I was on the band I also worked part-time at The Mississippi Traveler, an arts, entertainment, and restaurant blog. I wrote a column in the Traveler for six years that was the go-to for things that were happening in the Mississippi arts scene. I didn’t get paid but I did get free admission to as many as five shows a year to give me a chance to write about the experience.

Not much of a job, but in the summer of 2006, I traveled for a month in Mississippi with a friend. We were all on our own except for several people from the Mississippi Traveler who were helping us out. The goal was to write for the Traveler and help it grow. I enjoyed writing about these trips and meeting the folks from the Traveler but as I got older and went to grad school, I found it difficult to write about my experiences.

In the year since I last wrote for mississippi, the Mississippi Traveler has grown from a group of about 50-60 people to about 250. A few years ago, I thought it was a dream come true to have so many people who are interested in the same things that I am, but now I’m just glad that I had a chance to spend more time with it.
